A decided step forward in the continuous innovation of the GIS methodology for the evaluation of solar energy potential.
The IDERCEXA project is assuming a strong push for sectoral innovation in the cross-border region (EUROACE) in the field of renewable energies. Within the framework of the project, CIEMAT has applied the gSolarRoof model in two industrial estates (IP) in the region.
They are the PIs of Don Benito (Badajoz) and Plasencia (Cáceres). These PIs have been chosen for their representativeness under the consideration of the Extremadura Energy Agency (AGENEX), coordinators of the IDERCEXA project.
One of the main novelties of this project is the acquisition of centimeter resolution data (in an order of 10 times more precise than those of the PNOA) obtained from a series of photogrammetric flights carried out ex-process by the Extremaduran company Azimuth through the use of RGB cameras carried on a drone.
The high resolution and huge amount of data from the point clouds generated by this procedure have posed a huge challenge for the analysis and treatment of the information.
This fact will undoubtedly be a relevant milestone both in the IDERCEXA project itself and in the evolution of the gSolarRoof model.
In addition, the project incorporates another novelty related to the evaluation of the solar potential for water heating and its use in the different industries studied in the two PIs.
Through the geoportal we will be able to know the value of each of the warehouses of the PI studied, with respect to the roof surface available for solar installations, the potential that can be installed both thermally and photovoltaically and the energy and hot water generated.
A contribution to the development of renewable energies
We sincerely consider that these types of initiatives are a contribution to the development of renewable energies and to the implementation of a distributed generation system that makes it easier for institutions, individuals and companies to be part of the path towards a new energy model.
In this project, between the two industrial estates, more than 1,400 plots with a constructed area of close to 1,230,000 m2 have been analyzed. Of this surface, more than 60% would be usable for the installation of photovoltaic modules and, more than 35% for thermal solar collectors. This implies that more than 90 MWp photovoltaic could be installed, with a generation that would be around 120 GWh per year. Regarding the production of hot water, it could be equivalent to more than 300 GWh per year. In environmental terms, we could be talking about savings in emissions from electricity generation of around 40,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year.
